CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

RULES & INSTRUCTIONS

The Chess Championship is open to any student from Years 7 – 12 and each school is limited to enter three teams of four players.

Each school is to organise their players into teams of four. The teams should be organised by playing ability. The best team is named the “A” team the second best B and the third best C and so forth.

Players in each team are also organised according to ability. The best player in each team is known as first board, the second best second board and so forth.

Each team is to nominate a captain who is to look at the draw each round. No other player from that team is to ask about the draw.

At the start of each round the pairings will be posted in an accessible display area. Players listed on the left-hand side will be White and players on the right-hand side will be Black.

When all the games have been completed the captain of team is to indicate the result of the match. If all games were wins the reported score is 4-0. Note 1 point for a win, ½ for a draw, and 0 for a loss.

Normal rules of chess apply including the touch move rule, castling, en passant etc. N.B. The King must be touched first when castling, not the rook.

Spectators are not to talk to players while they are playing. If spectators talk it is the responsibility of the players to notify the Director of Play who will remove the spectators.

If there is a dispute it is the responsibility of the player to notify the Director of Play at the time of the dispute NOT AFTER THE EVENT.

The duration of each game is 20 minutes i.e. 10 minutes per player.

At the end of a game, set up the chess pieces again. DO NOT REVERSE THE CHESS BOARD. The colours must be kept the same way as you found them.

The tournament operates on the Swiss System; that is teams are seeded for the first round then the winners play the other winners of round 1 in round 2 and the losers play the losers. In round 4 the grand final will occur which normally decides the winner of the tournament.

The tournament is of 6 rounds duration.

An umpire, clocks to cover all games and chess sets will be provided by Chess Kids.
